EtymOnline

Douglas Harper's Etymology Online - one of the best etymological dictionaries for the English Language - takes its place with an official Windows 8 application. More than 37,000 cross-referenced word histories describe the wheel ruts of the English language, letting you browse through a picture of how our words sounded and what they meant, hundreds - sometimes thousands - of years ago. This version is fully offline, and needs no internet connection to run. We will keep the dictionary up to date, as the dictionary progresses nearly daily. Instantaneous search and a useful "snap" interface mean this tool is also great for work alongside your word processor.

Features:

  • Etymological dictionary of the English language
  • Instantaneous search
  • More than 37,000 words covered
  • Cross-references between related words, terms, and constructs
  • Prior language origins
  • Related language expressions
  • Word histories, meanings, known and probable roots
  • Useful support for the "snap" interface; can easily be used with your word processor

I Love this app! But I just wish it was not a trial, I understand that the app needs funding, but I don't have a PayPal or Credit card...

An excellent, well-implemented resource for educators and academicians. Highly recommended.

The website is priceless, and now, for a modest price, the experience is tailored to our Win8 devices! Thanks so much!

This is a great tool for understanding language and where it comes from. I'd like to see some instructions instead of the blank first screen, but otherwise, it works perfectly and responsively.

Let's just say... it is just preposterous that I'm thoroughly enjoying agressively throwing all kinds of words to this app. I'm not forswearing on this one. It's truly anomalous, and I feel I'm in derailment of my obligations. It's prepocessing me from my work tomorrow. Antidisestablishmentarianism! (Sorry, I just felt like saying that word. :) )

Great interface to the great online resource. I wish I could copy the lookups, though :/

Fairly often I find myself wondering how a certain word came into being. EtymOnline fills this niche perfectly, providing me with the relevant points of interest. However, when I opened the app, I was presented with a blank panel on the right; I wasn't sure where exactly to begin. I figured it out a few moments later, but a home page would really boost the appeal of this app. Despite a few aesthetic problems, I would certainly recommend giving this product a try!

Very fast and easy to use, provides lots of interesting information you can use to win arguments with friends about the history of words. Perhaps a little too simple, could use more features, but works well as it is, and does everything it claims.

Works exactly as advertised. Interface is direct and to the point. I do like the crosslinks as well. It's elegantly simple enough that there simply isn't anything to deduct a star for, unless you're expecting it to do something it doesn't claim to. 5/5.
