AC Biology: The Effect of Temperature on Enzyme Activity

Go beyond the standard textbooks and take learning to the next level. Complete virtual experiments, consider exploratory scenarios, make predictions and conclusions—learn science in a whole new way. In a virtual laboratory setup, you’ll experiment with potato extracts and the enzyme amylase to observe the effect that temperature has on enzyme activity. Then learn about the benefits of a fever in fighting infection but also the dangers of high body temperatures. • Discover how temperature affects enzyme activity. • Conduct an experiment on the effect of temperature on enzymes. • Gather data to test your hypothesis. • Identify the optimal temperature range for enzyme activity using a graph. • Learn how a fever due to infection can denature enzymes.

Features:

  • Explore biology in an interactive, virtual lab.
  • Set up and perform your own experiments on enzymes.
  • Make hypotheses and then analyze your data to draw conclusions.
  • Receive hints and tips as you perform investigations.
  • Test your knowledge of what you have learned and what you need to know.

This app begins with a question that a student would ask so they are immediately engaged. I like that students make predictions and then they have to test their prediction by collecting data. Feedback/explanations are given based on their choices. Students are guided through the steps and are given the opportunity to make multiple predictions and test each one. Good summary that pulls them back to the original question.
