Twigle Birds – Field Guide to Birds with Image and Audio Recognition

Here to help beginner and intermediate birders, Twigle automatically identifies birds from their photos and birdsongs. Simply select a photo or record a singing bird and Twigle will identify it. Twigle uses image recognition to help you identify 540 species of birds from North America, 350 species from Southern Africa and 310 species from the UK & Ireland with an accuracy of 60%. 90% of the time the correct species will be in the top 5. As a complete field guide to birds, Twigle includes a powerful search tool, HD pictures, detailed bird descriptions and birdsongs, all meant to help you better know your birds. Twigle is the first app in the world to have both image recognition for bird photos and audio recognition technology for bird songs. Download Twigle’s offline database containing information on bird behavior, habitat, diet, breeding and text description. Once downloaded, there’s no need to connect to the Internet to access the database – it’s all on your phone, ready for birding even where there’s no Internet connection. This bird identification app also gives you access to multiple images and composites for each bird, hear multiple bird songs and calls, and see highly detailed bird descriptions including habitat and distribution, feeding, breeding, and of course, their calls and songs. With Twigle, you’ll enhance your bird watching experience with these fun features: • Identify birds from their photos (requires an internet connection) • Identify birds based only on their calls and songs (requires an internet connection) • Search smart by color, habitat, bird size, and bird appearance • Keep a bird journal to record all of your memorable sightings • Explore composite identification images of birds in various stages of their lifetime • Listen to several bird songs and calls through the in-app database • View HD pictures to see each bird in high detail Download Twigle and enjoy birdwatching in a whole new way! NB: • Twigle's image recognition works with clear images, for example taken using DSLR cameras with the appropriate lenses. You can then transfer the photos to your device to identify the birds. Photos of birds taken with the phone's camera are generally not crisp and clear and thus are not the use case of this app (which is why there is no feature to take a photo using the app). We are working to improve this in later versions. • A purchase of Twigle comes with a Starter Credits Bundle with 25 credits, that allow you to perform bird image recognition on 25 photos. When these are finished you can make an in-app purchase of Premium Credit Bundles to photo id more birds. • Starter credits have a quota of 5 bird photo identifications per day. • Twigle's audio recognition is not yet available when you download the database for Southern Africa. • Currently Twigle performs audio recognition of birds only for the most common garden birds (50 for North America & 40 for Britain & Ireland). You can view the list on the Audio Search List page within the app. Twigle's audio recognition puts, for 70% of the time, the correct bird is in the top 10. Twigle's database downloads are quite large (several hundreds of MBs) and so it is recommended that you download them over WiFi to avoid huge cellular data charges.

Features:

  • Automatically identify birds from their photos.
  • Identify birds based from their songs.
  • Smart search of birds database by the features you see.
  • Keep a bird journal to record all of your memorable sightings.
  • Listen to bird songs and calls even while offline.
  • View HD photos of birds.

I downloaded the PC product and tried to identify birds from photos I had. I tried 5-6 photos but each time I received a message advising an "error had occurred" and "try another photo". After the 5th or 6th attempt I received a notice advising I had exhausted my search attempts and asking if I wanted to upgrade!! I don't think so.

Would not connect to server after installation because domain name was temporarily lost. Company fixed and communicated, but now that it connects, it has failed to identify even a bird in hand. App needs work.

Not many birds in the catalog. Just use an online site. This app is very limited. Save your money, don't buy!

I've tried re-installing this app twice now, and even with reboots in between uninstall, reinstall, and run, I still can't get it to run. Get as far as downloading and unzipping the database for North America, but then no pictures afterwards and it closes each time within about 10 seconds while unresponsive in the meantime.

Great idea, but doesn't work. Los must be incomplete because its convinced that the black birds are blue jays. Not once has it gotten a bird correct.

I've been unable to get even a single bird to register as "loud enough" for this app, even though the birds are only 15 feet away and I'm using a Lumia 930. Good luck getting this app to work for you.
